The radio is quite unusual in that it can be used in the car but can also be removed from the it and used as a standalone table top radio.
I plan to refurbish the radio and get it going again.

![]() I recently came across a Philips removable car radio from the 1970's while clearing out the shed. My Dad must have put it there when it was taken out of the car when it was sold. ![]() The begonia seedlings have been progressing well. About a month ago they were thinned out from the seed trays and put into the greenhouse. The seedlings were put onto the heated sand beds to help them develop. The weather for April has so far been dreadful, low sunlight, wet and cold....so pretty much par for the course for Scotland. ![]() I recently repaired a 29 year old washing machine for a neighbour. I know it sounds a bit mad but i took it as a challenge as long as the costs did not escalate too high. It was interesting to see how much and at the same how little the technology used in washing machines has changed. I think in such a high volume production market the maxim 'if it isn't broken don't fix it' or 'if it works why change it' is a good approach given the problems some manufacturers have had with machines causing fires. The set up has changed greatly over the years but the core remains the same as it has proved flexible, adaptable and reliable. Click here to find out more. The begonia seeds have progressed well on the propagator. They have been under the LED lights all this time which has greatly helped given the very dull overcast winter we have had. I left thinning out the seedlings a little late so i may have to prune them a little to get them a little bushier as they a a bit stringy at the moment. About 10 days ago i planted a second batch of seeds and they have also started to germinate so hopefully i should have a good spread of well developed begonias this year. The Tom Foolery seeds(on left) have had a high germination rate. The Destiny seeds(on right) have developed well but the germination rate was much lower than i had hoped. These were grown from seeds gathered over the past couple of years. I will buy some new seeds and plant these.
![]() I have completed development and early testing of a low voltage circuit which can be used to drive 12V LED bulbs. The circuit uses low cost readily available components and uses just 4 x AA/AAA rechargeable batteries. The circuit will be used to drive bike lights and hand held torches. ![]() After last seasons(2015) success with a small garlic crop i decided to go ahead again in 2016 but this time start early by germinating the bulbs in the propagator. I started by planting bulbs from garlic purchased in the local supermarket in small pots and leaving them in the propagator at 20 degrees. After 2-3 weeks 11 of the 12 bulbs had germinated. The 12th bulb took another 10 days to germinate but has since caught up with the others. When each plant had germinated and its shoots had reached the top of the propagator it was transferred to my home designed, home made propagator which is currently being used as a hot bed to encourage the roots to establish on the garlic bulbs. So far all 12 bulbs are making good progress and development is very similar for all of them. I plan to move them to the greenhouse for the winter and will probably start another batch of bulbs in the next few weeks. The bulbs will be planted out into the garden in March or April when the risk of frost has passed. ![]() I decided to make an early start on the seeds for 2016. As i had a great deal of success with the propagators and LED lighting last year i decided to do the same again this year but also upgrade the LED lighting to higher power bulbs. The begonia seeds require light to germinate and in Scotland at this time of year the sun does not get very high in the sky so the more light i can provide the better the chances of success. The seeds were planted on 28th November and after three weeks progress on the left hand tray has been excellent. Seeds first started to germinate after just over a week. The tray on the right has been less successful with only 15 seeds having germinated. There is one rogue French Marigold seed in the begonia tray on the left. The left hand tray is 'Tom Foolery',the tray on the right is 'Destiny'. By planting now i expect that when the light starts to improve noticeably in late February, early march next year the seedlings will develop very rapidly and i should have a good healthy early crop of begonias. ![]() A friend had a Radio Alarm she intended to replace as the display was difficult to read due to it being covered in dust. I thought it could be refurbished and put back into use as there was nothing else wrong with it. Click here to read more. |
