My neighbour's outside light suddenly stopped working a month or so ago. I immediately thought it might be the bulb, however when this was changed it was clear this was not the only problem. I removed the lamp housing from the wall and bench tested it. While it was on the bench i dismantled the internals and cleaned it up removing corrosion from the external casing and dust and debris from the internal parts. While doing this i discovered a quite shocking construction practice concerning the mains parts. The mains filter capacitor has two other discrete components mounted beneath it! The door bell button on my mother's front door self destructed a couple of days ago!. It is old but still in good cosmetic condition so i thought it was worth trying to repair it. Click here to find out more about this very short simple repair. An IKEA up-lighter i had for many years recently was damaged while i was decorating. I have used them to light up dark spots in many rooms over the years. They also have a second spot lamp on a flexible shaft which is useful for reading or lighting a work area. It was in excellent condition so i decided to spent a little time trying to fix it or if that was not possible, re-purpose or salvage reusable parts. Click here to find out more about this project. My mother's handheld blender recently stopped working. There was little or no warning of the problem. It was a good quality unit and as it only consists of a switch, motor and blades with drive shaft the problem could not be anything too complex. Click here to read more about this project. My mother's lawnmower recently developed a problem where it was getting a little more difficult to operate the electric motor with the control switch. Eventually it just would not start. After a short investigation it was found that the control lever had broken internally and needed replacing. Find out more detail on how this was solved by clicking here. New carbon brushes and some automotive air filter foam were ordered online to repair the mower. I said i would see if it i could repair it. When i opened the mower my first thoughts were, 'where is the motor' The mower is over 36 years old, was until recently still working well so i thought it was worth a try and after seeing this when the motor cover was removed it was a challenge not to be walked away from! I purchased these in 1984 or 1985 and they were never fitted to a car. I decided to refurbish it and to see if i could get it working again with a view to selling it to someone who is restoring a 1970's or 1980's car. Click here for more details. Since i posted details of repairs to a rechargeable toothbrush about a year ago i have been asked to repair a number of toothbrushes but the postage and packing to other countries made it uneconomic to do them. I was asked by a friend to look at a rechargeable toothbrush that was no longer holding a charge. Click here for details of the work carried out. A friend had a rechargeable battery powered hair trimmer which was no longer holding the charge. Although she has had it for about 13 years it was still in good condition and i thought that if it could be opened up and the battery replaced it would give many more years of use.
