A friend had a Radio Alarm she intended to replace as the display was difficult to read due to it being covered in dust. I thought it could be refurbished and put back into use as there was nothing else wrong with it. Click here to read more.

I started 2015 with great intentions of having a small crop of aubergines in late summer. Garlic was the other experiment. The garlic would be grown outdoors and the aubergines in the greenhouse. After many months of effort and careful attention this is the result! One small red aubergine about 20mm-25mm across. All that effort with 6 plants and this is it, one tiny fruit. To get this i started with one green fruit which came off the plant when i was clearing the plants out having decided the experiment was a failure. I did not even know it was on the plant. I had long given up hope of getting any of the flowers to develop into fruit having seen so many of them develop only to drop off at the slightest change in temperature. To be fair it was a very poor summer in Scotland( poorer than they normally are if that is possible) and the temperature was never high enough to get the fruit to develop even keeping the plants in the greenhouse all the time. I have since done some research and found that aubergines would always be very difficult to grow so far north even if i had gone to the expense of heating the greenhouse overnight. I will add this to the list of experiences not to be repeated. I decided to experiment with growing garlic this year, out of interest to see how it would go and also to try to keep cats away from using the garden as a toilet. The latter was mostly successful so i plan to do it again next year to keep the cats away. I started in January 2015 planting bulbs in pots in a propagator, transferring them to the greenhouse and then into the garden. I harvested them in late July 2015 and then left them in the garden to dry off. The results were way ahead of what i expected. I have been using the garlic to make soups, cook and to make my own garlic butter. I have given away quite a bit of the garlic butter and the feedback has been very good. I have also given away the garlic bulbs and let people use them how they wanted and most felt it was better than that available in the shops although the cloves were larger and more variable in size than the shop types. This may be due to me harvesting a little later, possibly by a month, later than i should have. I plan to increase the amount i grow next year and have already started growing about 12 plants in a propagator. The replacement battery for the electric toothbrush arrived yesterday and last night it was installed and tested. If you have a toothbrush where the battery has died it is well worth trying to repair it. If nothing else you will learn how simple the mechanism actually is. Click here for more information. Started work on repairing an electric toothbrush. It looks like the Ni-Cd rechargeable battery has reached the end of its life and will have to be replaced. Toothbrush has been dismantled and a new battery has been ordered. The new battery is expected within the next few days. Click here for more information |
