I started 2015 with great intentions of having a small crop of aubergines in late summer. Garlic was the other experiment. The garlic would be grown outdoors and the aubergines in the greenhouse. After many months of effort and careful attention this is the result! One small red aubergine about 20mm-25mm across. All that effort with 6 plants and this is it, one tiny fruit. To get this i started with one green fruit which came off the plant when i was clearing the plants out having decided the experiment was a failure. I did not even know it was on the plant. I had long given up hope of getting any of the flowers to develop into fruit having seen so many of them develop only to drop off at the slightest change in temperature. To be fair it was a very poor summer in Scotland( poorer than they normally are if that is possible) and the temperature was never high enough to get the fruit to develop even keeping the plants in the greenhouse all the time. I have since done some research and found that aubergines would always be very difficult to grow so far north even if i had gone to the expense of heating the greenhouse overnight. I will add this to the list of experiences not to be repeated.
