Background
Having refurbished some parts of the greenhouse last year i wanted to try to improve the efficiency with which i was able to produce plants from seed. I wanted to improve the flow of plant production through the greenhouse while keeping the energy usage as low as possible but still produce quality healthy plants.
Heated Sand Beds
I plan to make significant changes to the heated sand bed during 2019 making an enclosed miniature greenhouse within the main greenhouse. The modifications will be done in two stages, a temporary system and a longer term system. The modifications will be be modular allowing the greenhouse to be used in different ways throughout the year depending on what plants are being developed.
The first step has been to make use of the heated sand bed as early as possible in the growing season while using the minimum amount of energy and to try to maintain a steady stream of production plants throughout the growing season. In previous years a major problem has been managing the number of plants as they all reached the same stage of development at the same time causing problems with storage, particularly as the weather can be so variable and the available space is limited.

Begonia Destiny
Unfortunately most of the Begonia Destiny tubers did not survive the winter and i was left with only two plants. I had hoped that the tubers would germinate successfully so i did not plant any seeds this year! I will gather seeds this year and hopefully will be able to start a new stock of plants next year.
